Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great support and comfort I must admit when I first put them on the tongues did bother my ankles. However, after the first day of wearing them, the tongues no longer were an issue. I have very flat feet and terrible knees (over 5 knee surgeries on one knee and one surgery on the other) but these sneakers that I purchased in black for work provide the best comfort but more importantly enable me to walk with total support of my feet and knees with no pain at all the entire day and that says volumes. I recommend them highly. In fact, I've purchased over 10 pairs at one time from Penney recently and they were all true to size and fit great. You can't go wrong. Happy walking!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from not what i expected Based on previous comments, I purchased these with the belief that these where great walking shoes. I have plantar fasciitis and heel spurs and my Dr told me NB would be the best shoe for me. I didn't take an alternate pair of sneakers on a 5 day trip, so I was stuck wearing these and I was not able to walk very well after day 1. There was not a good arch support, so I had pins and needles in my arches every time I took a step. Since I had to change how I walk, to try avoiding the pain, I also ended up with ankle pain. I will be returning these immediately and going back to the Avia Archrocker. I have used Avia for years, they are half the price and have a much better arch support.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New balance these sneakers are the best as I work on my feet in a restaurant and my feet never hurt me unless its time for a new pair I have been wearing these sneaker for atleast 10 years now and now my co-workers buy these as well last along time but most of all the comfort of these are the best so far and I have been working in restaurant business for 41 years and never buy anything else but this sneaker.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from glad i kept them ! actually these r more comfortable once you wear them a day or two...i also experienced the tongue digging in but after wearing them a few days it didnt do it anymore...i was almost ready to return them, but glad i didnt...my other sneakers ( different brand with a R ) gave me foot pain...these do not ! finally something that feels better..and comes in velco too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This shoe is the best! Comfort, support and ample toe room are my priorities. I have used this style for 15yrs as a nurse, working on floor surfaces with minimal padding. I also wear them for my daily weekend chores & long distance driving. I use my "retired" work shoes for lawn chores. I hope they never discontinue this style.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best shoe I have found to wear for work. I am on my feet 8 hours a day, 5 days a week for work. I need a comfortable supportive shoe to wear. I fractured my back several years ago and I need a shoe that I can wear all day and not have an aching back when I get home. I have tried very expensive shoes, looked at consumer reviews and I am very satisfied with the New Balance shoe. I wear the black with long pants and the white ones during the summer when I wear shorts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from the best sneaker i ever wore. and. i had 6 knee operations I have been wearing the 577 for years now. Told by my podiatrist, physical therapist and orthopedic surgeon that they are excellent in support and stability for my major foot and leg problems. I hope they are never discontinued I'd be at a major loss.

Yes, I'm wearing a white pair right now with insole removed & my orthotic inside. Getting ready to order a black pair which I will also use with orthotics.

Answer:
Yes. I did not actually remove the insole but you can get your fingers under it and it does not appear to be affixed to the shoe foot bed.

Answer:
Yes, the insoles are removable and that is exactly why my podiatrist recommended New Balance so my orthotics could be used once the insoles were removed.

Answer:
The insole was removable but the rise of the shoe wasn't high enough to accommodate my foot after inserting my orthotics. I had to return the shoes. I have custom orthotics - one is about a quarter inch thick so yours may fit ok.
