It's like a regular bathroom rug. It has a very thin layer of rubber coating on the bottom. I wish it had more as I've had to put some double sided tape on the bottom to keep the rugs from bunching and scooting on my tile floor. I'm sure they would absorb water just fine, but for me, they were a bit thick to use as a bath mat. I prefer the ones that are more like thick towels as they dry faster in the southern humid climate. I bought this rug in particular only because it was the ONLY one I could find on line that was truly a 'brick' color and not red or rust.
