You don't have to. The way this maker works is not what one normally expects, but it is a very efficient. Unplug the pot. Plug the pot in, and you will see the GREEN light to your left. Now, press the button on the right top. You will see a RED light. This RED light, not a GREEN light, indicates your coffee is brewing! I know. You would expect the GREEN light on the left to be the one to indicate BREW, you know, GREEN for GO!! The only complaint I have is the design of the carafe. If you fill it for the largest capacity, pouring out the water into the machine or the coffee into your cup can make such a terrible mess unless you pour it as slow as a snail! My trick: I only make 3/4 of a pot at a time. More work but less waste! Hope this solves your dilemma!!!
