The sash goes through belt loops, so to speak. They are very thin pieces of string, really. I tried to move the sash more to the side when I tied it, and it wasn't easy, but I didn't put much effort in. It probably could be tied in the back, but removing it would leave those loops, which are probably small enough to cut off. I don't think the dress would look the same without it, though. Hope this helps!
