Great midcentury design, high quality construction and great, unexpected details. We are using it for a dresser now but it may end up in the dining room as a buffet.
A couple things not discussed in the description:
First, the side doors have handles (not shown in the image). There is a shelf and small drawer behind each of these on the side.
The linen-wrapped wood drawer fronts can be removed by removing a couple screws. We did this to scotchguard them. The linen looks great but something will try to stain it eventually. If it gets bad, they can be replaced with a different finished wood.
Its solid, meaning its also pretty heavy.

is there any way to utilize the side panels or is it just dead space?

A beautiful mid century inspired dresser. A bit more imposing than I was expecting, but overall I am thrilled with the look and the quality, especially for the clearance price. The cedar drawer is a nice feature as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Cece1231 this is a very nice transitional piece that can be used with pretty muchany upholstered bed.
Looks great. Delivery was quick. I think it is very versatile. It exceeded my expectations regarding styling. The drawers operate nicely. Hard to speak to the durability as I just received it on Sunday. Extremely pleased overall

Rated 1 out of 5 by KRMIT Completely Broke In One Week
While this bed is beautiful, it's not made to last. I had this bed for about a week and the bed completely broke. The sides where it connects to the headboard completely split in the middle of the night and the bed came crashing down onto the floor. In addition, the wooden slats broke and all the support beams in the middle also snapped. I had to support the bed with books until JCP hauled the bed away (they were really good about it, too).
When putting this bed together, you can easily see it's terrible quality. When you screw in the slats, you can then just pull out the screws because the wood is extremely soft.
I had read the review that said, "Don't buy this bed" and I shrugged it off because the other reviews are positive. Don't make the same mistake I did - look elsewhere for a bed of higher quality.
It's a shame because the bed is so beautiful, but I recommend looking elsewhere.

when I purchased the bed the reviews mentioned the bed had broken for several buyers. Now there are no reviews. however, we had this bed for 2 months and the side rails split and broke. I am 100 lbs and my husband 200. I have never broke a bed before.

This bed was delivered to my house in January. I liked the look of it though was disappointed it was not real wood for the price. I should have known it would not last. The particle board at the joint of the bed where the headboard is attached the sideboard completely split. I weigh 120 pounds, my husband weighs 160 pounds. We are not large people. And nothing crazy is happening in this bed. This bed is just not designed to last. To last 6 months for the money we paid is unacceptable and I'm counting on JC Penney to make this right.

Rated 5 out of 5 by RubyQ Gorgeous wood grain
We purchased this for our bedroom, paired with the matching Meridian dresser and side tables. This bed is gorgeous, the wood grain on the headboard is just stunning. The tapered style legs with brass detail give it authentic midcentury flare. The only complaint or warning i would give others is that this is basically a platform bed although there is no such description. Within the frame, the slats are so high that there is no need for a box frame, even with a low profile frame the mattress will then be ridiculously high, making the headboard appear short. So after purchasing our mattress we ended up sending back the box frame. We then secured some thin plywood to the slats to protect our memory foam mattress from indentation damage. But just know, a mattress is all you need with this frame, so you can avoid the hassle we had.
