The material is just like any other for furniture (not loose weave, more like a suede cloth) and would be cleaned in the same way. I have not had the need to clean mine, but would imagine under normal conditions, your vacuum would do the job. If it was terribly dirty you would use a dry or damp upholstery cleaner. They are wood covered with a firmly padded cloth and a the top of the seat is well padded (comfortable to sit on, but firm, not "cushy").
