The size depends on your window width. It doesn't have to be a thick rod, as the rod pocket is only about 1-1 1/2". I ended up having to buy two valances per window, as our windows were pretty wide. The valance just slides onto a metal rod curtain rod that sits in the rod holder that you nail/screw into the sides of your windows. No hooks or anything. A hint, because the valance is lace, it sometimes is hard to slide it onto the rod. I always put a couple of pieces of scotch tape on the end of the rod to help the valance slide on easier. After it's on the rod, just remove the tape. Hope this helps.
