cleans well, poor construction
I purchased this originally in Dec. as a "present" for myself since my in laws were coming for the holidays. The first one arrived with the box destroyed and the free bottle of cleaner had leaked out everywhere. I sent it back and got another one. I had read the reviews about poor construction, but since I had owned another hoover steam vac for 10+ years I felt I knew the quality...I was very wrong. I must say the carpet cleaner does a better job than my previous hoover. I have cleaned my carpets two to three times with it and they always look cleaner. However, today was the first time I used the attachments. The nozzle leaks non stop so it is impossible to get the water up. I gave up cleaning my furniture and turned to my carpet. The springs that hold the lid in place for the dirty water broke and I cannot use the handle to carry it any more. I just turned the machine off and water poured out from under it.
Bottom line, buy a different cleaner. This one was expensive, and very poorly made. Looks like I'm going with a bissell.

Best Ever - ***SERIOUS***
OK, let me just tell you that the past week has been nothing but research, research, research. After purchasing a competitor's last Saturday, only because I saw the infomercial the night prior, I was extremely upset, annoyed, and disappointed when its performance was less than 20%. (And that is being nice.)
So, now a very skeptical consumer, I decide to give the Hoover Max Extract a shot. My family has used Hoover products for as long as I can remember and I remember only excellent products with exceptional service.
I am pleased to say I was not let down this time either. Upon getting home with my new product, eager to use it, and pressed for time, I had the Hoover Max Extract assembled and ready to go in no time. After completing the first room, I was Shocked by my results. The extracted water/solution was BLACK!! I knew it was dirty, but really? WOW! Plus, the amount in the collection container was just about the exact amount I dispensed. I didn't think it to be possible, given my track record with previous carpet cleaners.
All in All, light weight, thorough clean, maybe a bit loud(but so what), and at a decent price. What more would you need? Maybe continuous performance...Got it too.
This review is made by me with no outside influences, and is strictly from my own person experience with the product. I highly recommend the Hoover Max Extract. I can not express my gratitude enough to Hoover and the Hoover family of employees for engineering and supplying such incredible products and service.
Thank You! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Very poor design and quality
I gave it one star because I couldn't give it none. I borrowed this from a friend who loves it. I think I like the way it cleans, but it's tough to say because I'm using it on carpets that are 30 years old. They have never been cleaned, so needless to say, the dirt is endless. However, due to the incredibly poor design of the tanks, I detest this machine. The first time I emptied the recovery tank, the retaining ears for the handle broke off the tank, so now I need buy a new tank, which isn't cheap in cost, but is of cheap quality. The other big problem is that if I am not extremely careful when I take the solution tank off to refill it, my fingers get pinched between the handle and the cap, which is very painful. I like to keep things clean, and would love to buy a reasonably priced carpet cleaner, but I will never buy one that has such lousy quality and ergonomics. I think that this machine could have been so much more with just a small amount of design forethought.

Best One I have owned !
I purchased my Hoover a few years ago and have been very pleased.
I own my own business repairing the interiors of automobiles for Dealerships.
I often come across stains that the detail shops are unable to remove.
I have made my own cleaning solution and with the hand tool am able to remove stains others have failed to remove.
The extraction of liguids is the best I have ever come across. The fabric and/or carpets are only left feeling damp. This makes it so much easier to get the vehicle completely dry prior to closing all windows and doors. If the vehicle is closed up prior to everything being dry it tends to end up smelling like a wet dog.
I am mobile and it is important for the job to be completed prior to my departure.
I also have four pets in my home. I have been extremely pleased with the results I get when I use this unit in my home.
I would highly recommend it to anyone I know considering a home carpet cleaning device.

Pros and Cons
Used this for 2 years.
Pros: Great at cleaning dust and fine particles that your vacuum kisses
Great at quickly cleaning wet spills on carpet and baby spills
Cons: For general cleaning you have to use a regular vacuum first otherwise the larger particles and hair will clog this up.
It's VERY difficult to clean the nozzle once hair and gunk gets clogged inside it.
Recommendation to hoover: Make the nozzle a sandwiched halves held together with screws so I can open it up and clean it. Replacement gaskets can be made easily with auto part store liquid gaskets.

First off I would like to say this shampooer works well when nothing is broken.
The water holding tank has such a poor design with the plunger plug. I used it twice & then the plug just wouldn't stop the water from pouring out so I went to the repair shop & purchased a new plug & it has lasted for 3 uses & now it is leaking all over again. I had a cheaper Hoover design without spin brushes that lasted me over 10 yrs & I would still have it if I hadn't received this one as a gift from my Aunt.

I have only had this a week but I cleaned some very dirty carpet and hard / tile / no wax floors with it. It did a very good job.
It has a few things I don't like. The squeegee for hard floors falls off anytime you lift the machine. The tool / accessory thing comes off sometimes ( I just wound up removing it all together. And man is it loud. It is about the noise level of 2 or 3 vacuums at once.

"Carrying handle" snapped
I've owned this cleaner for 48 hours, and the so called carrying handle just snapped which rendered the machine useless as the top tank falls out without it. The all terrain feature basically just wets the floor and the squeegee falls off there's no point even trying. Overall this machine is very mediocre. I've attached pictures of the handle and cleaned carpet.
