I purchased a solid white dress shirt (with French cuffs that require cuff links) to wear with the vest that I bought. I chose a white broadcloth shirt (and avoided a button down collar) also from JC Penney. I bought this for the very first very formal occasion that I ever attended. I am and was delighted with the final appearance all available at a modest cost.
I wore the vest with a bow tie and a solid white shirt. I did not buy any shirt with stripes.
Keep in mind that usually you want to keep the bottom button of the vest not buttoned. If you do wear a bow tie, then the bow tie usually looks better with a vest. If you wear a long tie, please be absolutely certain that the long end of the tie touches the top of your pants or the top of your belt. Regardless of whether you are wearing a vest, if the longest end of the tie stops before the belt then you will look like a man wearing a boy's tie. Re-knot the tie if the long length does not touch your belt.
I am sorry I cannot give you any information about a white shirt with stripes.
