Most dress shirts in my closet are 17 1/2 so I ordered that size. Couldn't even button the shirt although the neck did fit ok. I returned the 17 1/2 and then ordered the 18 1/2 from the big and tall section. It too runs small, however I can button this one. I don't know what your husbands neck size is, but I would at least order and extra inch. Sleeve length is also a bit shorter then normal. I generally wear a 33 length, the 18 1/2 is 34/35 and fits fine for my length. Really wouldn't want any shorter then what I have. Hope this helps.
BTW, The shirt is very nice. Has the studs, tie, cummerbund and cuff links. If you have to go too big in order to fit you can go to an upscale men's store, but keep in mind that the shirt will cost significantly more then JCP. I'm happy with mine. When I took to the cleaner for wash and press the tailor even commented on what a nice shirt this was. Good luck.
