boys and girls clubs of america
As part of our commitment, in August we're supporting Boys & Girls Clubs of America and 4-H, two after-school programs that help inspire and empower kids. From coast to coast, these programs provide America's youth opportunities to grow in a wide range of areas through meaningful relationships with adult volunteers, learning experiences and unique programs.español

For Nicholas Foley, early memories of life include bouncing around from home to home while in the foster care system. That was, until his aunt and her partner adopted him in 2002 and introduced him to Boys & Girls Clubs. Nicholas has truly taken advantage of everything the Club has to offer, from athletics to robotics, music and the dance team. He also served as treasurer of the Keystone Club, logging over 1,500 hours of community service in one year. He plans to attend Pennsylvania State University in fall 2012, where he will major in civil engineering. Nicholas was the 2011-2012 Boys & Girls Clubs of America National Youth of the Year for his dedication to the program. Nicholas is a shining example of the kids Boys & Girls Clubs inspire and empower year after year.
4h making a difference in the community
Vivian McCarter and her 4-H club were determined to help fight childhood obesity in their community. According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, two-thirds of adults in North Carolina are overweight or obese, and the state ranks 11th worst in the U.S. for childhood obesity. Vivian and her 4-H club used GIS and GPS technology to map out grocery and convenience stores in her county to identify stores with healthy food options. They then teamed up with a local group, Advocates for Health in Action, to improve food selections and persuade store owners to add better choices. Through Vivian's involvement in 4-H, the people in Wake County, North Carolina, now have the resources they need to learn about healthy food options and more ways to lead healthier lives.
