Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Dishwasher Safe! Received this as a gift and used it grind venison, elk, and bacon with the coarse plate on our first use. Did a pretty good job, only had some leaking from the screw on guard that secures the grinding plate and cutting knife. Following the manual, we washed the hopper as well as the screw shaft in the dishwasher. The attachment point where the grinder and stand mixer meet has now discolored to a dark gray and has residue that comes off when it is touched. The end of the screw shaft where the cutting blade mounts is also showing signs of rust. I would not expect for such things to occur with dishwasher safe components! Very disappointed and not sure where to go from this point. Liked using the grinder, but I am very concerned with how it could further contaminate food in the future. Hoping that Kitchenaid is willing to stand by their product so we're not stuck with something that can't be used. Will be reading the user reviews prior to purchasing any other attachments!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from unable to use for anything I bought this a while ago and today realized I can not use it for ANYTHING. A while back, I tried to grind meat with it, only to have it fail completely (the blade only mushed the meat, didn't grind it and the machine quickly became backed up), and today I tried to grind sliced ham, only to realize after grinding two pounds of it, that the middle of the grinder was rubbing metal on metal, pushing a gray fine metal infused substance into the ground ham. Needless to say, I had to throw out the two pounds that I ground, had to buy new ham and had to use my old hand-cranked grinder. Disappointing.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed I loved this food grinder, as I prefer to grind my own ground beef... however, the plastic cracked the metal piece/shaft that goes into the machine... after only using it a few times. I use my mixer for everything, but won't be using this accessory any longer. :-(

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good innovation, impractical design. I used this grinder for the first time tonight, and was mostly satisfied with the actual performance of the setup. Unfortunately, having used a commercial grade grinder before, I found the housing design to be frustratingly inefficient. If the food were droped into a v shaped chanel feeding down directly to the auger, it would eliminate the need to physically ramrod every individual piece of food down the frustratingly small shaft (likely eliminating most of the cracked housing complaints I have been reading), while at the same time mixing the ingredients much more thoroughly. I, unfortunately, will most likely not be useing this attachment again, simply because of the feeding mechanism. If a new housing is developed an marketed, I will happily look at it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Metal dust contaminating food - Beware We have had our unit for about 7 years and never had a need to use it until today. In about 1/4 pound of meat, it fully clogged the plate. Disassembling the grinder, the knife had been entangled in sinew. I had kept all fat but removed silver skin prior to grinding. Getting past the knife, the meat was all contaminated with metal rubbings and was dark grey. Further disassembly showed very light wear on the driveshaft. Not only was this unit unable to grind the meat, it was contaminating it as well. Nobody who wants a working product or cares for the health of themselves or those they feed should ever buy this unit. Many other similar reports are here in the reviews. My unit was a 7 year old system but was never used. Other people who just bought the unit experienced the same thing so they have done nothing to rectify it their manufacturing flaw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Problems with Food Grinder maybe assembly problem by user I love this food grinder and use it for all types of meat on a weekly basis. Today I accidentally did not assemble it correctly before trying to use it and learned that is a disaster and created most of the problems reported in the negative reviews here. Someone put away the parts to my food grinder and didn't put the little square "knife" part with the other parts and I somehow forgot it existed. So I assembled the grinder parts and it hardly worked at all. I go a small crack in the housing, had to use the pusher to even get anything out a all and thought I had broken something. I cleaned it all out and tried again and started even getting metal shavings grinding from the shaft into the meat. So I stopped, took it apart again and found a manual and realized I had neglected to put the little square part they call the "knife" on to the shaft before the round grinding plate. Once I found it and put it on, viola, no problems at all and it was back to working as it has always worked....which is GREAT......so I wonder if that is a part that people don't realize is essential to the operation of the grinder....it can't be lost or just ignored. In any case, there is the issue that these parts can be easily lost but I clean and dry mind and then store them all assembled in a large plastic zip lock bag near my mixer so it is ready to use next time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Broke on third use About this and this is the third time I've used it I was grinding bread and the housing in front broke off. I'm trying to grind fresh Meats at home but since this broke I can no longer do that. I love my KitchenAid mixers should have listened to the reviews and not bought this. I love how it grinds meat but I'm very disappointed

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Making an awful squeaking noise. I bought the grinder years ago and make sausage sparingly. It always has ground the meat well, but now makes this horrible squeaking noise. When I make bread, the mixer doesn't make the noise so I have deduced it is the grinder. I have tried using olive oil as a lubricant but that doesn't work. I am looking at buying a free standing meat grinder at this point.
