Hey Marian - the same thing happened to me very recently. I have two previously purchased pairs that fit me just right. This new pair (in the same size) was definitely too big. I had to re-order them in a smaller size (which fit just fine). Occasionally, I hear that manufacturers actually start cutting their patterns larger and keep the same size label in them so customers who are getting larger don't have to face that fact....at least not in the fitting room! By the way, the person accepting my return (at Cupertino, CA) where I picked up the smaller pair) was just marvelous handling the return because I had assumed they would fit just like the others had, and had removed all the labels and washed them BEFORE putting them on for the first time! She could have given me a lot of grief or red tape, but she was a real class act!
