Rated 4 out of 5 by Kate's Mom Great Company Stands Behind Fun Toy
Like the other parents who have commented, my three-year-old daughter really enjoys this toy and often takes it out and plays with it on her own--six weeks after receiving it as a gift for her birthday. I, too, have been having trouble with the dry-erase "icing" markers for decorating the cupcakes: It was so hard to wipe my daughter's old designs off the plastic frosting that she started using the underside of the frosting caps to create new designs. Finally I called customer service: They recommended using a DAMP cloth to wipe of the "dry-erase" markers. I felt like a bozo for not thinking of it myself, but, otherwise, it was a great customer service experience. (I still can't get the dry-erase-marker marks off the wooden cupcakes, but the wooden cupcakes are not intended for use with the markers.) I, too, think this is a great toy for both boys and girls.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Girly Girl Mom Great cupcake set but markers need to go
My daughter absolutely LOVES to play with this set -- she pretends it's someone's birthday... Sings "happy birthday", serves everyone, and "blows out" the candles. It really is adorable. The only issue I have (and this is a big one) is why on earth Melissa & Doug (normally such a child-oriented company) would use non-washable markers for the decorative icing for a toddler toy! If the icing goes anywhere other than the plastic toppers (i.e, on the wooden cupcake or a child's clothing), it causes a permanent stain. I actually just threw the icing markers away tonight because I was so upset that my daughter's shirt (worn today for the first time) is ruined (I tried EVERYTHING to clean the marker & it just will not come out). It's really a shame because the cupcake set without the markers is wonderful.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Lulu Mom A birthday any day!
We bought this for our 2-yr-old girl and she and the 4-yr-old neighbor girls love it! It is a good source of fun in our house. Putting on the little oven mitt and pretending to work with 'hot' items is great practice for little ones, but coloring on the frosting is definitely the toy's biggest 'draw'! We often just use washable markers instead of the cute frosting markers, since the colors seem to come off more easily. I would like to see the frosting lengthened a bit to allow more room to color. Adding a second oven mitt would be nice, since the cupcakes are heavy and holding a full muffin tin with one hand is hard for them. Making the box with a lid would be helpful for keeping pieces together and could easily double as an oven. The biggest disappointment for me was that the cupcakes were just brown for chocolate and yellow for vanilla. The cupcake blocks could easily be two pieces (top and bottom) to allow cutting like most Melissa & Doug food, and rather than waste paper on cupcake holders, they could be painted in fun cupcake holder styles. This would let children 'cut'and switch around the pieces, and might even deter them from coloring on the wood where marker doesn't come off.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Mommy on the Go Stains Clothing
We love Melissa and Doug items. We currently have the birthday cake, ice cream set, sandwich set, cookie set, and cupcake set. We have never had a problem with any of their items, until the cupcake set. The dry erase makers seem hard to get off if they sit for a while (couple of hours)on the icing and if your child touches their clothing with the marker, you can hang it up. My daughter got the blue marker on her shirt yesterday. Within in 5 minutes of getting the ink on her shirt, I had treated the shirt and got it in the wash. When I got the shirt out, the stain was lighter, but was still very visible. I would recommend, but I would take the dry erase markers away and let them use the crayola washable dry erase crayons on the cupcakes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by S. K. Bake and Decorate cupcake set
I purchased this set for our grand-daughter who just turned three. She loves to play with the set, however, I was VERY disappointed in the three colored (pink, blue and green) tubes of "cupcake icing". While decorating the "icing" toppers, she accidently rubbed the open tube on her new shirt. The stains would not come out of the shirt and it was ruined. I believe a substance for the use of three year olds, should either have a warning that the dye is permenant, or have a dye that is washable. Other than this problem, the set is great, and I am currently looking for a marker that will not ruin her clothes. Until then, we have removed the "icing" from her set. I would recommend this toy to anyone but with reservation.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Tammy Kids all ages love these!
I bought this set for my 4 yr old for Christmas. He absolutely loves it. In fact all 5 of my children(ages 12, 10, 8, 4 & 2) all play with this set! As I was typing this my 4 yr old carried them in and was making cupcakes. My only real complaints are I wish the cupcake holders were actually sturdier, like plastic or wood because they get destroyed. We have recently been having issues with the dry erase not erasing off of some of the tops also. And one of our candles broke. But I think it was well worth it and probably one of my son's favorite presents. His older sisters play with him and he bakes the cupcakes in his little brother's oven. It is really a fun set despite the few issues

Rated 5 out of 5 by Madison's Mommy My daughter LOVES this toy!!!
I bought these cupcakes for my 2 year old daughter from an ice cream/book store in town. She absolutely loves it! She plays with them all the time and never seems to get bored with it! She enjoys having friends over as well, and sings happy birthday! I just use a baby wipe and the marker comes off, even on the wooden part! She even drew all over her arms with the markers and they were also very easily cleaned with a baby wipe! I will buy this toy for our friends childrens for birthdays and I will buy other toys like this for my daughter! Thanks from a happy mommy!

Rated 3 out of 5 by Marker all Over So cute but markers do NOT wash out!
My daughter got this product for her 3rd birthday last night and absolutely loved it however after playing with it all day long the markers will not wash off of her hands. My 5 year old also had the same problem. When I rinsed off the tops for her to play again & try a new design my hands were covered with marker that still will not wash off, while whiping off some of the tops a faint residue of marker remained on...some marker did get on their clothes & I am concerned about it washing off. I did have to take them away & she still will play with it but was really sad she could no longer draw on the tops!
