Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much improved. Due to the previous GE refrigerator that we had we looked for a non-GE refrigerator. However, as we shopped we could find no refrigerators that met our expectations. We looked at the new side by side GE Refrigerators and were surprised to see that the things that we did not like about the old one had been improved. Now, with the new model, we can access ice by hand through a swinging door on the icemaker. Before, the bin had to be removed to access ice by hand. The ice maker on/off switch is now easily accessible. And the freezer shelves have been improved. The old ones would fall. The support for the shelves has been improved and the shelves stay properly in place. A new feature that I like is the temperature read out on the door. Now there is no guessing as to whether the freezer and refrigerator are at their proper temperatures. This refrigerator is roomy and we have no problem storing several large items. Such as a whole turkey, pies and dressing can be stored all at once. It also handles a watermelon quite well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice refigerator but beware of height of DOORS I just got this refrigerator today after my old one died. Because of cabinets above, I couldn't go more than 69.5" from top of door hinge. On EVERY website of stores carrying this appliance, INCLUDING the GE site, maximum height was 69.5". However, no where was it mentioned that the DOORS were higher than that! Even the dealer was embarrassed because he was seeing the same information that I was. I decided to keep the unit and will have to OPEN THE FRIDGE AND FREEZER DOORS in order to ever open this cabinet (also pull out the unit a bit), but the items stored there are not used frequently anyway. I hope GE changes their specs to clarify that the doors are considerably higher than the base of the cabinet. Like the fridge but am disappointed with the misinformation.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from GE Side by Side Refrigerator Freezer- GOOD BUY Purchased this fridge in April 2016. 10 yr old previous fridge died. I was looking for something similar with moveable shelves and quickly found out most have preset shelving. The GE was one of the few with multiple shelf options. Though not as many as my previous fridge. It got very good ratings and so far has been a winner. Very few complaints. It would be nice if the control panel lit up so you didn't have to turn on a light when getting water at night. The ice does some times come out in bulk, (this was one of the complaints in the online reviews) not a major problem though. I would also like more shelf level options, but it's better than most of the models I looked at. Overall very satisfied with the quality and performance.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from So far so good Bought this refrigerator 6 weeks ago as a quick replacement when ours went bad. I was just recovering from surgery and didn't have time to shop. I took what we could afford that was the same size as our old one. So far it works great but I'm not happy about the expensive water filter replacements. They do give you a plug so you can with unfiltered water. What I don't like are the really large dome light that hogs usable space and the new way the doors close or should I say don't close. Any refrigerator I've ever owned would allow you to open it grab a bunch of stuff and close by itself, the doors were made that way and very convenient. Now, no matter how far I open the doors and let them swing back they don't close they bounce in a partially open position and you have to actually push them shut. What really tickles me is that GE is touting this as a new feature. I think they had a failed attempt at making self closing doors and decided to call it the latest design. It does run quiet and the icemaker works as expected but then again it's only been 6 weeks.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but wish inside was better designed My old refrigerator was 16 years old and was slightly smaller in cubic ft. But, I could put more food in it than I can this slightly larger GE. Whoever put the protective covering on didn't think - plastic is caught under the edge along the doors and at the top, and I cannot get it all off. I think the black edging was put on after the protective plastic so it is stuck. What I don't like: narrow freezer bins that barely hold anything, ice maker takes up too much space; baskets need to be a little wider so they don't slip off the side runners; bottom basket that is only half the depth of the freezer. My old one also had a half shelf on the top that was great for allowing 2 levels for jars. Now I have empty space. What I like: the slate gray color that does not show fingerprints (although the stainless handle does); bins are a good size for fruit and vegetables; refrigerator door bins are deep.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spacious and efficient. We were very pleased with this purchase - the ice maker can be removed which is a plus when filling coolers. The shelves adjust easily and I love that wine bottles fit nicely in the door. Would recommend this side by side!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from temperature in fridge too high I bought this unit about two weeks ago, and am finding that the top several shelves, along with all the shelves in the door, are only cooling to about 40-42 degrees - and higher still if I've had to open the door a few times. Forget the "actual temperature" reading, which is ridiculously inaccurate. It's showing 33-34 degrees (as low as it goes), but I have four thermometers that strongly disagree. FDA food safety guidelines state that perishable food should be stored below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. That means that I'm only able to safely use about 40% of the shelf-space for perishables. The other 60% can be safely used for drinks and condiments. Sorry, but I just don't use that much ketchup, folks. GE: who cares about bells and whistles if your product can't do the one thing that it's supposed to do - keep food cold. I'm going to call for service next week, but I have a feeling I'm going to have to send this back and go with something else. Is anyone else having this issue?

Rated 3 out of 5 by from it's a refrigerator Just a basic side-by-side refrigerator. Nothing fancy like French doors or anything like that. We've had it for about a month and our experience so far is we can't seem to get the temperature right for either the freezer or refrigerator even though we set it to the recommended settings displayed on the door. For the freezer portion, frost is collecting on the shelves and on the refrigerator side there is water at the back of the refrigerator by the water filter. The freezer side is a bit narrow and the icemaker sticks out a bit too much on the door. I like the drawer baskets at the bottom of the freezer, just wish they were a bit wider. Then on the refrigerator side, love the lighting and very spacious. With regards to the water and ice dispenser - watch out! The ice cubes come flying out! Water shoots out the same way so just be prepared.

Does the slate color show fingerprints?

Asked by: Pianogirl720
No fingerprints on the slate (the finish is beautiful). But the door handles sure do!
