Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much improved. Due to the previous GE refrigerator that we had we looked for a non-GE refrigerator. However, as we shopped we could find no refrigerators that met our expectations. We looked at the new side by side GE Refrigerators and were surprised to see that the things that we did not like about the old one had been improved. Now, with the new model, we can access ice by hand through a swinging door on the icemaker. Before, the bin had to be removed to access ice by hand. The ice maker on/off switch is now easily accessible. And the freezer shelves have been improved. The old ones would fall. The support for the shelves has been improved and the shelves stay properly in place. A new feature that I like is the temperature read out on the door. Now there is no guessing as to whether the freezer and refrigerator are at their proper temperatures. This refrigerator is roomy and we have no problem storing several large items. Such as a whole turkey, pies and dressing can be stored all at once. It also handles a watermelon quite well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A good replacement One week into usage and I find this to be a good replacement for my 10+ year old "premium brand". Apparently, not much has changed but numerous parts seems of lesser quality. The refrigerator took several hours (4+) to reach operating temperature - I believe my old one of the same interior size took half the time. The interior lights gives off a bluish hue which may need some getting used to; perhaps there is a purpose for that. The front water/crushed/cubed-selectors does not light and therefore in low-light one can not see where to change selection before using. GE advertises the slate coloration to be resistant to fingerprints and smudges however let it be known that the handles are not. I chose GE because a service tech claims that he has the least service calls from this company - the brands with high tech being the highest (sorry - not allowed to name brands).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spacious and efficient. We were very pleased with this purchase - the ice maker can be removed which is a plus when filling coolers. The shelves adjust easily and I love that wine bottles fit nicely in the door. Would recommend this side by side!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from temperature in fridge too high I bought this unit about two weeks ago, and am finding that the top several shelves, along with all the shelves in the door, are only cooling to about 40-42 degrees - and higher still if I've had to open the door a few times. Forget the "actual temperature" reading, which is ridiculously inaccurate. It's showing 33-34 degrees (as low as it goes), but I have four thermometers that strongly disagree. FDA food safety guidelines state that perishable food should be stored below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. That means that I'm only able to safely use about 40% of the shelf-space for perishables. The other 60% can be safely used for drinks and condiments. Sorry, but I just don't use that much ketchup, folks. GE: who cares about bells and whistles if your product can't do the one thing that it's supposed to do - keep food cold. I'm going to call for service next week, but I have a feeling I'm going to have to send this back and go with something else. Is anyone else having this issue?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Fridge purchased this refrigerator for our newly remolded bar in the basement... was looking for a basic fridge and those were cost the same price as this model, so we went with the added features... this has all the additives you could want for a main refrigerator... lots aof adjustable shelves, doors open wide. nice glass shelved. the only thing I wish it has was a door stop... there no way to stop the door from hitting my wall on the right side... not a big deal, but is a kid swings it open too hard, it could damage the adjacent wall...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Little Things Appreciated I returned the first of these refrigerators due to poor set-up and prep by the big-box store's delivery crew. The second one came and I've had time to use it. A couple little things have caught my attention. Using the water, a light comes on over the water area and then goes out per a timer, a few seconds after the water has stopped. Speaking of water, the GE water filter is very conveniently located--it's mounted vertically above the top shelf in the refrigerator side. No more climbing on the floor, removing the heat coil grate to remove the filter as in my old unit. The freezer's ice maker has a swing door letting you see how much ice is there (it seems to hold a lot) and it works as a pass-through so you can reach in and turn the ice maker off if needed. Our model's electronic panel has a Door Alarm. It will beep if a door is open for longer than 3 minutes. You might consider that a cute gimmick, but I consider it a feature that will help prolong the life of the refrigerator. Our last one was left partially closed many times and I wonder if that helped lead to its early demise. You'll find this a modern, attractive, and very capable appliance.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice side by side refrigerator We bought this within the last month. It is almost identical to the refrigerator we replaced except this one is slate and the prior stainless steel. Stainless is nice but hard to keep fingerprints etc off of. The slate needs less cleaning and is also magnetic. We would have preferred a french door model but hard to find one with external ice/water in our budget. French doors are nice because you get more refrigerator space up top and smaller freezer compartment below. The only reason I am giving a four star is because the refrigerator we replaced blew an internal component and was just barely cool to freezing or just above. It was not cost efficient to repair. That refrigerator was nine years old and after researching we found the lifespan could be anywhere from 8-17 years so we wished we could gotten more time with it instead of an unexpected large expense to replace now. You do hear water refilling to the ice maker or ice dropping but nothing bothersome. The one thing we use all the time is the ice dispenser and water outside the refrigerator and we would not give this up. Overall it is a good refrigerator and we would recommend it for family or friends.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ok Choice Bought this unit on 6-20-17 after another had failed after 10 years of service. Would consider it an upgrade from the last model but the ice maker and compressor could be a little quieter. GE should look into this issue considering the price paid for this unit and from an engineers view. Nice unit and would buy again as of this review.

It's not frost free but has auto defrost. Please explain the difference.

Asked by: Rich
If this were frost-free, it would never accumulate frost.
