The waterproofing is the full size of the flat portion of the pad that covers the top of the mattress. The sides, which create the "fitted" cover, are a thinner material and are not lined in waterproofing. This cover works very well for my needs. I know the waterproofing is good because when I wash this item, even on a harder spin cycle, the water will sometimes become trapped between the two layers requiring some manual manipulation and an additional spin. I have also not found any shrinkage to the top dimensions after drying. I also use one of these as a temporary protective cover on my expensive leather recliner (it hugs the top, sides and foot-rest) when grandchildren visit. It is quilted on top which creates a soft, comfortable surface. Perfect for my needs; good quality and good price.
