Exercising is an excellent (and often-quoted) resolution for the new year. But, did you know that actually resting more and soundly is an equally healthy habit? Getting enough sleep is crucial to your health. An adult still needs at least seven hours of sleep at night. And, not restless sleep, but solid, quality slumber. How do you achieve this, you may ask? We’ve compiled some bedding products to help you get your best sleep ever.
Starting with the core of the bed, the mattress serves as the foundation for a deep sleep. The right mattress can determine between tossing and turning all night to waking up refreshed. When was the last time you bought a new mattress? Generally, they should be replaced every 7-8 years. Perhaps this new decade would be a good time to treat yourself to a new mattress. There are many choices to consider. Are you a side sleeper? A memory foam, innerspring or soft-top mattress might be best for you. Back sleepers can be comfy on almost any type of mattress.
There are also tight top, euro top and pillow top mattresses for a firm to soft construction and surface. Luckily, JCPenney offers all the best brands like Stearns and Foster, Tempur-Pedic, Serta and Sealy. And, as for bed size, there’s Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King and California King. Of course, adding a mattress pad or topper can add some extra ahhhh to your sleep as well.
When you slide into bed, you want the sheets to feel smooth and comfortable against your skin. Choosing the right set for your preference and your bed can be a challenge. Tip: the higher the thread count, the denser and smoother the sheet. A lower thread count can be more soft and airy. Make sure to wash new sheets before sleeping on them to soften them and remove excess dyes.
The fabric, like cotton, microfiber, sateen or percale, makes a difference on how they feel as well. As for the comforter or bedding set, obviously select the look you want to match your decor, but also consider the weight to match the season and temperature so you can stay cool or warm, depending on the weather. Options include quilts, coverlets, bedspreads and duvet covers.
And, finally, what you lay your head on can have an impact on the quality of your sleep. The right density of a pillow can encourage neck and spine alignment to create a better, healthier snooze. A stomach sleeper might benefit from a flat pillow while a back sleeper needs a medium to firm, average fill pillow. A side sleeper is best on a firm to extra-firm pillow with extra fill. If you change positions throughout the night, opt for a soft pillow that can mold with your frequent moves. The filling on a pillow can include down, feathers, synthetic or memory foam. Maybe choose a couple varying styles for you bed to discover the best fit for you.
Finish off your beauty rest with a throw or blanket to keep you extra cozy. Some anxious sleepers have found comfort in the popular weighted blankets. The extra weight can induce calm in some people. Heated or electric blankets could provide that extra warmth you crave to fall asleep better and stay asleep longer.
