You’ll be dreaming of eggnogs all year long. You can make it without the alcohol or even serve it as a Christmas alcoholic drink.
4 egg yolks
4 egg whites
1 pint whole milk
1/3 cup sugar, plus 1 tablespoon
1 cup heavy cream
3 ounces bourbon
1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
For a spiked eggnog
1/4 cup white rum
1/2 cup amaretto liquor
Step 1: In a stand mixer, beat the egg yolks until they lighten in color.
Step 2: Gradually add 1/3 cup sugar and continue to beat until it is dissolved. Then add the nutmeg.
Step 3: Pour the milk, cream, and bourbon and stir to combine.
Step 4: Beat the egg whites in the stand mixer to soft peaks. Gradually add 1 tablespoon sugar (with the mixer still running) and beat until stiff peaks form.
Step 5: Whisk the egg whites into the mixture.
Step 6: For a spiked version, pour the eggnog, into a pitcher with the amaretto liquor and white rum. Stir to mix everything with a wooden spoon.
Chill and serve in coffee mugs.
Snow Day Hot Chocolate
A dreamy holiday drink for everybody on a cold day by the fireplace.
4 cups whole milk (or any non-dairy milk)
8 oz. dark, semi-sweet, or bittersweet chocolate (60% cacao, preferably)
3 teaspoons powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon salt
Step 1: Finely chop the chocolate into small pieces on a cutting board.
Step 2: Pour the milk into a small, thick-bottomed pot on low heat and bring to a low simmer. Keep whisking occasionally to ensure that the milk doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan.
Step 3: Add the chocolate, vanilla, powdered sugar, and salt. Whisk vigorously until the chocolate has melted (about 4 minutes).
Step 4: Divide between coffee mugs and add a splash of liquor if desired.
Step 5: Top with a couple of marshmallows or a dollop of whipped cream.
Joyful Cherry-Orange Moscow Mule
This bubbly recipe is bursting with fruity freshness and a spicy ginger kick. It’s perfect as a thanksgiving cocktail or even a Christmas cocktail.
2 ounces freshly squeezed orange juice
8-10 mint leaves
About 6 cherries, pitted and stemmed, if not using cherry-infused bourbon
2 ounces cherry-infused bourbon or regular bourbon
6 ounces ginger beer
Mint sprig, for garnish, optional
Whole cherries, for garnish, optional
Step 1: Use a paring knife to cut off the bottom of the orange and use that as the base. Cut off a piece of peel shallowly by moving the knife away from yourself in a downward direction. Once done, set aside.
Step 2: Pour orange juice and pitted cherries into a cocktail shaker. Add mint leaves and muddle.
Step 3: When the cherries break down, pour the bourbon, some ice, put the cocktail shaker top on, and vigorously shake for about 15-30 seconds.
Step 5: Squeeze and twist the orange peel to release its oils and drop it into the mugs or glasses. Garnish with a mint sprig and cherries if desired.
