Do you wake up in the morning and say, I must have slept funny? Getting a good night’s sleep is important and if you don’t have the right kind of pillow it can create havoc. We all know about replacing mattresses every eight-year, but about pillows? For maximum comfort, support and hygiene, replace your pillows at least every two years. At JCPenney, we have the right pillows that will help your keep your spine stay inline and help you with your sleeping posture regardless of your preferred sleeping position. Keep scrolling to learn the tricks in picking the perfect pillow for a restful sleep.
The Right Pillow for Any Sleeping Position
A pillow is supposed to cradle your head in a neutral position, properly aligning your neck to your spine. Your head shouldn’t tilt far forward, backward, or to the side.
For stomach sleepers, look for a soft to medium pillow with a synthetic fill. Back sleepers might prefer a slightly firmer pillow with a natural fill like down or feathers. If you sleep on your side, look for a firm to extra-firm pillow to support the gap between your head and shoulder. A memory foam pillow might be a perfect choice. And if you tend to toss and turn, try a soft pillow with a natural fill that can easily be fluffed, squished, and adjusted to provide comfort in any position.
Filler Material
There is a variety of fill options for pillows. The most common type is down pillows. It’s light, soft, and fluffy at the same time. Down pillows are usually made from goose or duck fibers. Goose fibers are much softer compared to duck down. If you’re prone to allergies, go for hypoallergenic pillows. They keep away dust mites, pet dander, and mold. You could also go for synthetic or polyester fills. They tend to be medium to soft and come in a variety of fill options like latex and gel.
How Many? What Size?
Sleeping pillows are 20″ deep. The width varies from 26″ for standard/queen to 30″ for queen and 36″ for king. Use one standard pillow for a twin mattress or two standard or queen pillows for a full or queen mattress. For a king mattress, use either two king pillows or three standard or queen pillows. When buying a new sheet set, add in an extra set of pillowcases either in matching or complementary colors or patterns.
Keeping It Clean
Over time, your pillow absorbs dust, mold, bacteria, allergens, and dead skin. So, it’s best to cover your pillows with a zippered pillow protector before you add the pillowcase. On laundry day, remove the pillowcase and pillow protector and wash both.
Many pillows are washable. To keep them at their freshest, wash them twice a year. Be sure to rinse and dry thoroughly, following the care instructions. Throwing a couple of clean tennis balls in the dryer will help keep your pillows fluffy and lump-free. Pillows that aren’t washable usually have a removable, washable pillow cover.
