Whether you’re hosting a big Thanksgiving dinner or an informal dinner party, setting a table properly may get overwhelming. To make it easier, we bring you the basic steps to follow for table setting etiquette. We’ve also included GIFs for each scenario, so you can easily visualize which flatware goes where. And, at JCPenney, we’ve got all the essentials you need to set the table.
Start with laying down a Placemat, then add a Plate in the center
Choose the perfect placemat, depending on the dining table décor needs to preserve the tabletop and light up the dining area. Then, place the dinner plate in the center, followed by a salad plate and a soup bowl on top of your dinner plate. Again, reach for dinnerware that meets your décor needs.
Laying down the Flatware
Place the table knife, dinner spoon, and soup spoon on the right. On the left goes the dinner fork and salad fork. You should only set the utensils that will be used throughout the service. Say, if there is no soup, there’s no need to set a soup bowl and soup spoon.
Laying down the Drinkware
The table setting is mostly designed for right-hand dominant diners, and thus drinkware is placed on the right side. You can place a water glass, wine glass, and coffee mug (from left to right) about an inch above the placemat.
