Our founder James Cash Penney's legacy of giving back to the communities in which we live and work is as relevant today as it was when he opened his first store in 1902. This commitment continues today as we focus on building strong, vibrant communities. We do this by investing our time, money and effort into causes and charities that provide resources for moms and kids, and through the volunteerism of our passionate and engaged associates across the country. We believe our commitment is worth every penny.

The JCPenney Foundation is a 501(c)3 public charity supporting programs dedicated to helping moms by providing underserved kids with clothing needs, youth opportunities such as afterschool programs, and career readiness and development. Some of our recent grantees include: The Y, Armed Services YMCA, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, After-School All-Stars, 100,000 Opportunities Initiative, Texas 4-H Youth Foundation.

Our more than 100,000 associates across the country actively give back in their local communities. Associates who volunteer can earn James Cash Penney grants, which provide up to $600 a year to the nonprofit organization of their choice. In 2016 alone, individual associates logged more than 13,000 volunteer hours and designated over $66,000 in grants to their favorite nonprofit organizations. Additionally, our local store teams can donate up to $500 in merchandise gift cards to a local nonprofit organization through our Store Community Grant Program.

Building on a nearly 20-year relationship, JCPenney has teamed up with the Y as its signature charity partner. The collaboration with the Y allows JCPenney to strengthen the communities where its customers and associates live, work and shop. Working with the Y, JCPenney is helping kids and families reach their full potential. Customers and associates see the partnership brought to life through product purchases that support the Y's youth development, healthy living and social responsibility initiatives along with fundraising and exclusive events in local JCPenney stores and communities.

JCPenney is honored to stand by the men and women who serve our country. We support military families through organizations and programs such as Boys & Girls Clubs of America's Military Youth, Armed Services YMCA's Operation Hero and Carry The Load's National Relays.

As a longstanding supporter of breast cancer research and programs, we are doing our part to "Give Hope and Save Lives." JCPenney is proud to support the American Cancer Society for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The American Cancer Society is the nation's largest, nonprofit investor in cancer research. While working with the American Cancer Society, we've developed distinctive programs, products and services that encourage our customers and associates to become involved in raising awareness and funds to fight breast cancer. The American Cancer Society does not endorse any product or service.
