Liz Claiborne: 50 Years of Bold & Counting
Born in Belgium in 1929, and then moving to America in 1939, Liz Claiborne became an icon of the fashion world by founding Liz Claiborne, Inc. in 1976. The company was an immediate success, thanks to Claiborne’s stylish yet affordable apparel for career-oriented women, and by 1986 she became the first female CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Each of the pieces in her colorful collection could be mixed-and-matched, giving her customers the flexibility to design their own signature styles while retaining the core look and feel of Liz Claiborne.
Claiborne was also a trailblazer in department store marketing strategies, namely by insisting that her clothing line be displayed as its own collection within a store. This decision enabled customers to shop the complete assortment of pieces by a single brand for the first time, a novel concept that has since become standard in retail stores across the world today.
